GEOSCIENCE TEACHER LEADER CRITERIA: DEVELOPING NEW STANDARDS FOR PEDAGOGICAL EXCELLENCE

METLAY, Suzanne T., Teachers College, Western Governors University, 4001 South 700 East, Suite 700, Salt Lake City, UT 84107 and ELLINS, Katherine K., Office of Outreach and Diversity, Jackson School of Geosciences, The University of Texas at Austin, 10100 Burnet Rd., Bldg. 196, Austin, TX 78758

The National Association of Geoscience Teachers (NAGT) Teacher Education Division (TED) is developing criteria to recognize active K-12 Earth Sciences educators as leaders in and exemplars of their profession. NAGT TED seeks to publicly recognize peer-nominated K-12 geoscience teachers who distinguish themselves through service to their professional community, distinction in their classroom, and dedication to informal geoscience opportunities or field work for their students. Original criteria are in development by NAGT TED and are adapted for geoscience educators from domains of the National Education Association’s Teacher Leader Model Standards (2011) as well as the work of Ellins and Stocks (2017). Selected individuals who meet a designated number of criteria will receive TED dues coverage for an academic year and award as an NAGT TED Geoscience Teacher Leader. Those who meet a higher standard will receive an academic year’s NAGT membership plus TED dues coverage and be honored as an Outstanding Geoscience Teacher Leader.
