The International Geoscience Education Organization was formed during the Third Geoscience Education Conference (GeoSciEd III) in Sydney, Australia in 2000. The main aim of the society is to promote geoscience education at all levels and geoscience awareness of society.

IGEO is affiliated with the International Union of Geological Sciences and has memoranda of agreement with other organizations such as the International Association for Promoting Geoethics (IAPG) and the International Association of Geoethics (IAHEGT).

IGEO sponsors the GeoSciEd conference every 4 years. IGEO also organizes the education sessions and holds an assembly at the International Geologic Congress.

Involvement in IGEO is voluntary, every person interested in being informed and kept up-to-date on the activities of the organization can register on the IGEO website (www.igeoscied.edu). As of April, 2019, more than 500 people from 78 countries were registered. Forty-four countries have an official delegate on the IGEO Council. The executive officers of the Council are elected at the GeoSciEd Conference.

In addition to the GeoSciEd Conferences the main activities of the last 20 years include:

• The International Earth Science Olympiad (IESO). IESO, held annually, has had the greatest impact of any IGEO activity. Students are selected by competitions in their own countries.

• Geoscience Education Survey. Every 6 years a survey is conducted to track geoscience education in the countries where IGEO has contacts.

• International Geoscience Syllabus. This document provides curricula developers around the world an idea of what a 16-year old should be expected to know.

•My Earth Science Educator Story. A collection of the stories of Earth Science Educators around the world.

• IGEO Publications. Free research and teaching materials can be downloaded from the website. These materials include a geoscience textbook that can be adapted for local use.
