Innovations in immersive interactive technologies are changing the way we explore the evolution of our planet, its environments, and its species. The combination of mixed media including 360° photographic and simulated spherical environments, virtual reality, gamification, and adaptive learning design have the power to trigger a user’s curiosity, resulting in a heightened motivation and a richer, more unique personalized experience. The past 25 years have delivered greater immersion, adaptivity, and software development for virtual explorations, thus allowing a far richer and more engaging experience in these environments. This talk will focus on the building blocks that have led to the virtual field trips in our educational arena today and what the near-term possibilities of these environments might look like tomorrow.
