College clubs focusing on academic goals and education to further students growth as undergraduates by engaging individuals in their academic studies beyond the curriculum and classroom. The Geology of Earth and Ocean Science Club at Scottsdale Community College (SCC) has given undergraduates opportunities to practice leadership skills and develop knowledge in the field. Teamwork building was developed through planning of community service projects and educational field trips that took place throughout the state. Logistics and lesson plans prepared by club members ensured safe and educational club outings. Funding for these outings required members to strategically budget and market mineral sale fundraisers. To engage with non-geology students, a newsletter featuring everything about the club and its adventures was established and is regularly published throughout the year. Since club establishment, geology classes at SCC have had higher enrollment rates, suggesting that the club has successfully developed academic influence with students. The impact of club activities and events will be explored for a better understanding of how a geology based academic club affects the community, students’ interest and engagement in geology.
