THE AMERICAN GEOPHYSICAL UNION'S "100 FACTS AND FIGURES": ENGAGING THE SCIENCE COMMUNITY AND BROADER PUBLIC AUDIENCES THROUGH A COORDINATED SOCIAL MEDIA CAMPAIGN

MCCARTHY, Kelly, Centennial, American Geophysical Union, 2000 Florida Ave NW, Washington, DC 20009

The American Geophysical Union (AGU) is celebrating its Centennial milestone with a multitude of efforts to broaden and deepen engagement within and outside the Earth and space science community. To leverage the power of social media, the organization carried out its “100 Facts & Figures” campaign with multiple touchpoints to engage members of the science community while reaching broader public audiences. This discussion will capture strategies around establishing a graphic template, selecting imagery, and sharing digestible plain-language statements to represent technical topics within the constraints of social media, while taking advantage of its expanse. Comparative data on engagement values for static vs. animated graphics will also be shared.
