MAKING WAVES – INCREASING THE VISIBILITY OF OCEAN SCIENCES AT 2YCS IN SPITE OF ONE-COURSE OFFERINGS

ANDERS, Tania-Maria, Department of Earth Sciences and Astronomy, Mt. San Antonio College, 1100 N. Grand Ave, Walnut, CA 91789 and BORYTA, Mark, Department of Earth Sciences and Astronomy, Mt. San Antonio College, 1100 N. Grand Avenue, Walnut, CA 91789

Even with the growing importance of Ocean Sciences, especially in light of climate change, many 2YCs are locked into a one-course offering (“Introduction to Oceanography”). Students often take this course to fulfill their general education requirement. How can we recruit more students to learn about this field that is increasingly important for all citizens? What can we do for students beyond this course, especially those who have taken an interest in Ocean Sciences and wish to dive deeper?

We will be sharing the results of the work we did as SAGE 2YC Change Agents, a project led by Heather McDonald and her team. With their guidance, we increased the visibility of oceanography on our campus and beyond. We will be sharing our ideas in this session and hope to inspire you to implement some of these suggestions on your campus.
