A BRIEF HISTORY OF ATMOSPHERIC SCIENCES EDUCATION RESEARCH (Invited Presentation)
The importance and contributions of Discipline Based Education Research (DBER) are well established and recognized as playing a critical role in systemically changing the way teaching and learning occurs in higher education. This is especially important in the atmospheric sciences as many of the greatest challenges facing society are rooted in weather, climate, and natural hazards. While the atmospheric science community has been working in the space of scholarship of teaching and learning and DBER for well over a decade, in recent years a critical mass of scientists and educators have established an Atmospheric Sciences Education Research (ASER) community. This presentation will provide an overview of the evolution and development of the ASER community with a focus on highlighting the opportunities to establish cross-disciplinary connections.
