A WALKING TOUR OF PERUGIA, ITALY: EXPLORING THE BUILDING STONES USED IN THE CITY'S CONSTRUCTION

DIFO, Gloribel and DOMACK, Cynthia R., Department of Geosciences, Hamilton College, 198 College Hill Road, Clinton, NY 13323

Perugia is an historic hill-top city located in central Italy. This beautiful city can be characterized by the locally quarried building stones that were used to construct much of the architecture. A geology focused walking tour was constructed to show the often-overlooked connection between the locally quarried stones of this region and the civilizations that used them to build Perugia. While spending the Spring 2019 semester abroad in this city, Difo photographed the buildings and monuments that were constructed of locally quarried travertine and marble. In addition, research material and background information specific to each site was obtained. These components were compiled into a geologic walking tour that tells the story of Perugia through the stones that have stood strong for centuries. The walking tour also includes a list of museums and archaeological attractions located around the city that could be of interest to the visitor.
