UTILIZING EARTH DATA STORIES TO PROTECT AND SUSTAIN TRIBAL CULTURAL HERITAGE IN A CHANGING CLIMATE

RATTLING LEAF Sr., James, 5445 Friendship Circle, BLACK HAWK, SD 57718-8100

Indigenous communities have a close and longstanding relationship with nature and the environment, as such their traditional knowledge and learning is incredibly important. This includes how to cope with local-level climate variability and effectively responding to major environmental changes, such as disasters. Whilst Indigenous peoples are key stakeholders for addressing global challenges related to climate change and biodiversity loss, they often lack the technologies and resources to help them secure their land rights and monitor threats to their lands, waters and environment. There is a need to promote Earth Observation science, data, tools and services to address the sustainable management of Indigenous lands and guided by meaningful consultation which is critical for protecting cultural heritage. This presentation will provide a broad perspective on the process for incorporating Earth Observation data, science and technology into geospatial applications to protect and sustain Indigenous Cultural Heritage utilizing Earth Data stories.
