THE GEOTRIP PODCAST: GEOSCIENCE EDUCATION, ROOTED IN COMMUNITY BUILDING

PRINCE, Kieron, Broward College, Physical Sciences, 3501 Davie Road, Davie, FL 33314 and WELCOME, Leiaka, Colorado School of Mines, Department of Geology and Geological Engineering, 1516 Illinois St., Colorado School of Mines, Golden, CO 80401

Efforts to produce a more equitable geoscience community have highlighted the need for more accessibility and visibility of marginalized groups and individuals within critical geoscience spaces. This need, coupled with the ever-changing landscape of how information is disseminated, influenced the rationale behind the launch of The GeoTrip podcast; a geoscience-focused podcast that intentionally amplifies the work of those typically underrepresented in the field of geoscience.

Currently, the main objective of The GeoTrip is to function as a science outreach tool that: (1) provides a platform where marginalized geoscientists can discuss their research and other work outside of scientific silos and (2) archives and shares the personal experiences of said geoscientists and (3) can be used to build a community that connects these students across institutions where they might feel isolated because of a lack of cultural sensitivity or accessibility.

Episodes of the GeoTrip have hosted guests from various geoscience-related backgrounds who have worked in some combination of academic, industry and community-organizing roles. As a result, episodes span diverse themes that explore wide-ranging topics including volcanology, hazard assessment, climate change, and even how to apply to graduate school. Although some topics are highly technical, we employ plain language and an engaging, jovial delivery to reach outside of the geoscience silo and communicate with a wider audience effectively as feedback from our non-geoscience listenership has attested. To date, metrics detail that our audience is worldwide, with most listeners located in the USA followed by the Caribbean, Europe, and India.
