CAREER CONNECTION EXPLORATIONS: ENRICHING MIDDLE SCHOOL SCIENCE USING NASA RESOURCES

BOWMAN, Luke1, DANHOFF, Brian2, MATTHYS, Anthony2 and BLUTH, Gregg J.S.2, (1)Geological and Mining Engineering and Sciences, Michigan Technological University, 1400 Townsend Drive, Houghton, MI 49930, (2)Office of the Provost and Department of Geological and Mining Engineering and Sciences, Michigan Technological University, 1400 Townsend Drive, Houghton, MI 49931

This project provided opportunities for middle school students from all backgrounds with immersive experiences in STEM-based careers through hands-on, Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS)-aligned experiential learning. Students experience how real scientists use NASA data and tools to solve problems. They first explore careers related to natural Earth processes and changing environments through tailored vignettes highlighting real life Earth Science professionals. They then engage with NASA tools and datasets to explore how each professional uses NASA data to answer questions and solve problems.

The Career Connection Explorations include investigations of the following STEM career pathways: 1) Meteorology; 2) Volcanology; 3) Geospatial Analysis; and 4) Science Communication.

We partnered with Mi-STAR, a nationally recognized curriculum development project, to leverage its experience developing equitable middle school STEM-based lessons, and remote learning options for Michigan school districts. Additionally, this project developed tailored professional learning and support to partner teachers in high-needs districts.
