THE WORLD NEEDS SCIENTISTS ENGAGED IN ADVOCACY & ACTIVISM — HERE’S WHERE TO START

MARCHESANO, Christopher, Climate Science Legal Defense Fund, New York City, NY 10115

America is in the swing of an incredibly important election cycle, which will ultimately dictate how our nation chooses to address the escalating effects of climate change, as well as other matters of scientific importance.

In this session, CSLDF attorneys will discuss different ways that scientists can participate in elections-related advocacy or engage in other forms of activism while making sure to reduce risks to themselves, both personally and professionally. Topics will include:

1) Best practices for engaging in political and electoral advocacy.

2) The do’s-and-don’ts of interacting with Congress on legislative policy.

3) First Amendment rights for scientists.

4) How to safely participate in collective actions like rallies, marches, and protests.

We will also explain potential new threats to the federal civil service, which may have significant impacts on both scientific integrity and employment security for federal scientists.
