GROUP LEVEL ASSESSMENT (GLA) AS A METHODOLOGICAL TOOL TO GIVE VOICE TO DISABLED GEOSCIENTISTS OF COLOR
In recent years, geoscience disciplines have begun exploring the foundational issues of identity-based marginalization and their continued impact on recruitment and retention. New uses of intersectionality-based research methodologies are working to understand the complex nature of underrepresented identities. Here we highlight the use of Group Level Assessment (GLA) as a participatory methodology to generate, analyze, and prioritize ideas for designing and implementing actions to address social issues. GLA provides a participant-driven action plan that can help push for direct involvement with communities most affected by social issues. This presentation will highlight four key themes brought forward from the participants of a recent GLA as well as guidance on how to design actionable approaches. Understanding intersectionality through a participatory research method can begin to mitigate the various forms of marginalization still present within the discipline and guide institutions of higher education and other geoscience workplaces to improve recruitment and retention of a diverse scientific workforce.
