ROCKFALL MITIGATION ALONG US 340

RADABAUGH, Bryan, Geostabilization International LLC, 2 White Oak Drive, Ripley, WV 25271

The US 340 Rockfall Mitigation project, situated along US 340 in Jefferson County, WV, addresses critical challenges affecting roadway and trail traffic in the Loudoun Heights region of Harper’s Ferry National Historical Park. The very challenging and dynamic geology that exists above the Shenandoah River and US 340 in the area presented numerous challenges for the design and construction teams. The project utilized a combination of rockfall mitigation techniques to address the slopes above the roadway.

The presentation will focus on how pre-construction reconnaissance combined with construction efforts were utilized to mitigate rockfall hazards present in unique geological conditions.
