UNIQUE WALL CONSTRUCTION TO ADDRESS STABILITY (IN KARST) AND REVIVE THE LONGMEADOW SHOPPING CENTER
When Sears constructed a building at the corner of Northern Avenue and Route 60 in Hagerstown, Maryland, the exterior wall retained approximately 20 feet of karst and the adjacent roadways. The abandoned building was to be replaced by a new Sheetz Store. The building demolition could not negatively impact the stability of Northern Ave. The proposed solution was to turn the Sears exterior wall into a permanent retaining wall. The presentation will cover the site challenges, design, and the wall construction to support the new Sheetz. The aesthetics included a sculpted geologic finish to match the local geology.
