GETTING TO KNOW GROUNDWATER THROUGH VISUALIZATIONS TAILORED TOWARDS HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS AND NON-HYDROGEOLOGISTS
Groundwater science is not part of a high school science curriculum, nor learn individuals much about groundwater other than in post-secondary (university) groundwater courses. As a society, getting to know groundwater will not only create an appreciation for this generally poorly understood natural resource but also creates a collective awareness that groundwater needs to be better managed and protected to ensure it is a sustainable resource for humanity and ecosystems.
One focus of The Groundwater Project (www.gw-project.org) is to convey essential groundwater information and concepts through a collection of introductory groundwater books with a broad audience in mind. The focus of such books is on self‑explanatory diagrams used to enable the visualization of various groundwater concepts and allow the reader to better imagine and absorb the learned concepts. The aim is to create simple, unique and accurate illustrations often a combination of schematic (explaining the concept) and photographs (seeing the concept).
